All About Drug Testing

Drug testing or  A drug test is an analysis of urine or blood samples to check for the presence of illegal drugs and their components. Other specimen that can be used are sweat, saliva, hair, and breath. Urine drug testing is the most common of all because it is the cheapest among the other methods. Drug test differs depending on the type of specimen to be collected or the type of drug to be tested, but they all serve the same purpose, and that’s to prevent any drug-related accident or crime.

Drug TestingAccording to the National Institute for Drug Abuse (NIDA), aside from alcohol, the most common drug involved in car accidents is marijuana. The percentage of drug-related car accidents can be reduced if everyone complies to the traffic rules. Obviously, all drivers are responsible for the safety of the roads, that’s why the Department of Tourism (DOT) requires an individual to undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to obtaining a driver’s license.

For business operations, the employers have the responsibility to facilitate or implement drug and alcohol testing after informing the employees about its rules and regulations. This is to ensure and promote a drug-free workplace for everyone. In some states, drug testing is a mandatory part of the job application process. If blood samples are to be used, they usually screen them for the presence of amphetamines, cocaine, nicotine, marijuana and alcohol.

Some athletes reportedly use artificial drugs or stimulants to gain advantage over their rivals. These drugs can make athletes increase their endurance and speed reaction and also to recover quickly for longer training periods. Thus, drug testing is becoming more common in the sports industry amidst the controversies. To ensure the accuracy of the results, the test is made randomly, meaning any athlete can undergo the test at any day or time. About 90 milliliters of urine sample is collected per person. In some cases, blood samples can also be used.

Because drugs can literally be everywhere, other schools and institutions also conduct random drug testing to ensure every student’s safety and well-being. However, there is currently no law to support this mandatory testing in schools because controversy regarding student privacy is still at stake.

Although we have to admit that drug abuse is becoming more and more rampant, it is not solely the reason for every accident or every crime committed. Drug testing is only one of the many ways to ensure safety in every setting.
